Chartered in 1981, the Albuquerque Woodworkers Association (AWA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit service organization based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While AWA was founded to educate and support woodworkers in their pursuit of the craft, the organization has evolved into a community-serving association whose members use their skills, tools, knowledge, and resources to make a positive impact throughout New Mexico.
AWA’s community service activities are carried out entirely through the volunteer efforts and generosity of its members. Through woodworking, members serve individuals, families, schools, and charitable organizations across the state.
Recent and ongoing projects include:
- Building more than 1,500 wooden toys annually for children in need.
- Supporting the New Mexico Ramp Project by constructing and installing wheelchair access ramps.
- Building dog houses for Albuquerque Animal Welfare to distribute to low-income pet owners.
- Constructing Little Free Libraries that promote literacy and neighborhood book sharing.
- Donating and refurbishing woodworking equipment for schools and community colleges.
- Supporting Habitat for Humanity through handcrafted gifts and future furniture initiatives.
- Creating Beads of Courage boxes for children facing serious illnesses.
- Participating in Adelante Development Center’s GiveABQ programs through donations of handcrafted boards and artwork.
For more than four decades, AWA members have demonstrated that woodworking is more than a hobby. Through craftsmanship, volunteerism, and generosity, the Albuquerque Woodworkers Association strengthens communities and improves lives throughout New Mexico.
